Until a matter of weeks ago, it was scarcely imaginable that education settings in England would be closed to all but a small group of children. Managing this transition has been enormous undertaking for leaders of local education systems. Here, we have gathered the reflections from leaders of 10 local education systems on responding to the crisis, adapting to a “new normal” and planning for “return and recovery”.

In these uncertain, unsettling and unprecedented times, like everyone else, we at Isos have been taking stock of the unfolding situation regarding the coronavirus and considering how we should respond so as to fulfil our responsibilities to each other, to our clients and partners, and to help to tackle the further spread of the virus.

Between October 2019 and January 2020, on behalf of the Local Government Association we facilitated a series of eight regional workshops exploring the strength of local partnership working across education, health and care in relation to support for young people with special educational needs and disability. Over 300 people representing 99 local areas in England took part in this work, and we have published a short summary and set of self-evaluation tools to capture and share the learning from this work.
